Ruhaniyat, The All India Sufi & Mystic Music Festival

Ruhaniyat has been organizing Sufi & Mystic Music Festival once a year at seven centers across India every year for the last 10 years. The organizers believe that as the carriers of living traditions of Sufi & Mystic music, the event will bring the lofty messages of great Sufi saints and Mystics alive. The music concert on 19th November, held in the backdrop of the historic Purana Qila (Old Fort) in the heart of Delhi, did bring the messages of the great saints alive. The concert was presented by Banyan Tree Events, and supported by 'Incredible India', Government of India tourism interface.

When Mir Mukhtiyar Ali sang soulfully these lines of Saint Kabir, the stage was set was an enlightening evening: When I (The individual ego) was, Hari (The Ultimate Truth or the Composite Whole) was not; and when Hari was, I was not.

Multi-tasking: Parvathy Baul played a string instrument with the right hand, a percussion instrument with her left hand, immersed herself in singing Baul songs even as she danced joyfully, all at the same time! She is a practicing Baul Singer.

There were a couple of more performances but, unfortunately, I had to leave early. The ones that I missed out were: Sema - Whirling Dervishes from Turkey and Sufi Qawwali by Fareed Ayaz & Group from Pakistan.

A couple of lines on the Purana Qila itself.  The Purana Qila or the Old Fort was part of the city of Dinpanah, one of the seven cities founded by various rulers at different times in the history of Delhi. The city of Dinpanah, with Purana Qila as the inner citadel, was founded by Mughal Emperor Humayun. Some structures were added to the fort by the later ruler Sher Shah Suri who defeated Humayun in 1540 AD.
